THE REVIEW
In THE THIRST, Maxx has a Girlfriend named Lisa, whom unknowingly to him is dying from cancer. Well one night, Lisa escapes from the hospital and Maxx later finds her dead in their apartment - dead from apparent suicide. Maxx frustrated with the loss of his beloved Girlfriend is talked into joining two friends for a night out at the popular local goth club called Club Inferno. When Maxx arrives inside the club, it is apparent that this isn't his type of place as he sort of sticks out amongst the sea of regulars. It is then within that sea of regulars that Maxx spots a woman, dancing in the midst of them that looks just like Lisa. Convinced that it is Lisa he tells his friends of what he saw and of course they don't believe him. The night night Maxx decides to go to the club again, but this time alone. He then discovers that on the second floor of the club, something different is going on. The mysterious section of the club is reserved for a strange breed, these people look and appear to be human, but are actually blood sucking Vampires. The group eventually catch Maxx and take them to their hideout, hosted by their leader, whose name is Darius. It is know known that when Lisa supposedly died she was actually turned, and is now one of them and by the suggestion of Lisa, Maxx agrees to let him turn him also. At first the killing of the innocent and the feast on their blood was fun and games for Maxx, as he seemed to love the thrill and excitement of draining the life out of someone. It is later in the film that, both he and his girl friend grow tired of these activities and realize that what they and their "family" do is wrong - they have a change of heart. Still being of their kind, they decide to go against them, and rid the earth of their cruelty, and before the film ends we realize that this is really part love-story complete with gore.
Being a big fan of THE LOST BOYS, I was quite excited when I heard of this film called THE THIRST - as I thought it might be interesting to see a new twist on the old concept. Sure in this one we have a brood of Vampires, a family if you will lead by Darius, each member seems to be diversely different having their own personality. The only difference between this film and THE LOST BOYS is that in both films we see a naive new member brought into the fold whom later fights against his kind. Other than that THE THIRST really as no middle plot, or as i'd call it, "meat" to support the films ultimate goal or agenda it wishes to accomplish by the film's end. Character development here is poor as we don't know Maxx well enough beforehand to have his "turning" be very substantial nor meaningful, and this occurrence was to be one of the main points within the film, but when it happened it wasn't a shock, I didn't really care either. The same could be said for Lisa all we know about her is that she's an ex junkie who turned to stripping, and she later finds out she has Cancer and is dying (ultimately hiding it from her Boyfriend). These elements are merely touched upon, but very thinly, not enough to establish a connection with the audience who watch. The family of Vampires is not very formally organized as those characters and personalities I mentioned earlier are all over the place, and before you know it, they are only vaguely important to this story, serving as reasons to show more gore.
Other critics have praised THE THIRST as being "a fun gore-fest", and in reality of it all, that's all it is. Sure there's a ton of gore drenching this, movie, and sure this is probably one of the most blood filled movies I may have seen - but it is also one of the most LIFELESS as well. Gore very much doesn't matter to me if there is nothing else to support it, and any good merit or plot THE THIRST may have had, gets lost within all the unnecessary, ridiculous and unrealistic gore scenes, that are truly over-excessive. The moral point of this story is that Maxx and Lisa are able to find each other again and remain in love, but it takes a rather long and dull road to get there, complete with jittery editing and many scenes that make little sense at all.
I also found most of the acting uninspired and lifeless as well. I found Matt Keeslar's performance as Maxx to be, (if i'm being honest) horrible, I got nothing from him nor did I find his portrayal believable. Clare Kramer, as Lisa is decent but still not very memorable to me. I wanted to see this mostly because Jeremy Sisto is in it as Darius. I am a big fan of his usually but here in this film he sports an accent, you don't believe for one second, as it sounds different in nearly each scene.
Overall, I didn't get what I expected when watching THE THIRST, I was actually bored at times, this film had nothing to keep my interest, just gore with absolutely no purpose, and a story with no real heart, unlike the films it seems to be influenced by.

GORE
METER
7/10 As I said, gore is this film's only real attraction, their is blood coming from everywhere, via the various neck wounds and everything else.

MUSICAL
SCORE
4.5/10 There are various rock tunes and ballads from different bands on the soundtrack, some of which really don't seem to easily fit in the film.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
As I said, with THE THIRST, you have blood coming from just about every direction, but no plausible story coming from anywhere. Of course all of the gore is cool at first, but for me, after awhile it grew old and I was looking for something else to happen, and it just never did. When recommending this film, all I can say is that this one is purely a matter of taste and opinion.
