PLOT
Spring break, seven teenagers, a secluded cabin, and a dark forest... Sound familiar? Not this time! There's Nothing Out There takes the teenage slasher genre and turns it on its end! One of the teens has seen every horror movie known to man, and now he's armed to spot the danger signs of a massacre in the making-- a good thing when there's an evil alien presence in the woods... hungry and ready to mate!

THE REVIEW
THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE, was the the inaugural effort that brought Director Rolfe Kanefsky in into the world of filmmaking, little did I know it would be so entertaining!

The story is rather simple, it revolves around a group of high school teens that go up to one of the kids' father's house in the woods for a spring break celebration. Upon arriving the teens notice an accident in which a car is severely damaged and overturned. One of them, Mike is an educated horror movie fan and has seemingly seen every horror escapade known to man, Well Mike is convinced that the accident was all the work of an evil force, but his assumptions are ignored by his friends... and Mike is just seen as "crazy". Sure enough, once the teenagers venture into the house in which they plan to stay, it seems that each of them are being attacked by a species, of some sort of slimy, green eyed monsters. It turns out the Mike, the one thought to be insane initially, was right all along as many Horror movie clichés' come into play.

For a debut film, at that time by first timer Rolfe Kanefsky, this film turns out to be a really good one and funny at that! With THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE, Kanefsky to me at least, shows no signs of being a rookie director at all. He has since went on to direct films such as CORPSES, and the film that has become some kind of of cult favorite between Tiffany Shepis fans, THE HAZING. THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE, shows you why he went on to be the director he is today. In the film he mixes comedy and horror, and the overall appearance of the film gave me the feeling I was watching a Troma film. Now this is not a bad thing however, because I happen to be a Troma fan myself, The cheesy gore is so comedic and great, that I am surprised the film is not in Troma's catalog. The directing was slick, at least in my eyes. Some of the shots had the feeling that you were looking through the creature's eyes, while other times you feel like you are in the victim's skin, truly a claustrophobic feeling....I thought it was great!

Well, i'm still not sure really what I should call the film's creatures, or better yet what they were, They were really cheesy it's admitted, but if they looked too real, the question is, would this film be as fun as it is and was? No one will ever know for sure. As far as acting, in these types of films, it is for certain nobody would be walking away with an award. But the cast was there and did the best that they could, most of them debuting... much like the film's director. On an average scale, i'd say the film's acting is rather average, with the most memorable performance of Craig Peck, as Mike....his Horror paranoia. is something to laugh at in a good way.

GORE METER
4.5/10 Not really much in the gore department...probably do to budget alone. But there is a really cool scene in which a face melts off, as well as a decapitation

MUSICAL SCORE
6/10 The music featured in the film gives you the feel for the time in which it were made, the late 80's early 90's. The music is a nice mix, I though it fit quite nicely with what was going on.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
I really enjoyed this film. After seeing Kanefsky's newer works, it was nice to go beck to see where he began. The film is highly entertaining and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys spoofs, or just flat out goofy Horror movies. I did not hear all of it, but the commentary is really informative and also entertaining as well. See this as a double feature along with THE HAZING and you will be set!
