THE REVIEW
In ROOM 6, our character Amy is a school teacher whom often has terrifying nightmares. In these nightmares she is in a hospital, a hospital in which she knows nothing about, she doesn't understand the dreams at all. Her dreams begin the control her life somewhat, and it strains her relationship with Boyfriend Nick. One day, both Amy and Nick are involved in a car accident, Amy is left unharmed while Nick breaks a leg and needs medical attention. Things get a little more than weird when Amy is informed that he has been transferred to a hospital called St. Mary's, a medical facility that she nor anyone else has ever heard of. Open further searching Amy finds out that this "missing hospital" just may be the hospital that she sees in her dreams every night and that it is much more evil than her dreams ever revealed....
ROOM 6 turned out to be a lot better than I expected, given writer/producer Mark A. Altman recent track record. Having produced HOUSE OF THE DEAD and it's sequel...one of which totally bombed and left fans unsatisfied, and the sequel only being decent, it was followed by another decent film ALL SOULS DAY. I'd say that with ROOM 6, Altman has finally produced a film in which he probably hoped the others would be, to me ROOM 6 is his best Horror work to date. ROOM 6 plays on the clique line between dreams and reality, at times you are not sure if you or seeing a dream, in my opinion, ROOM 6 plays out very much like a Stephen King adaptation which is one thing I loved about it. The traumatized Amy suffers from the nightmares she has, but once in the accident, she is seemingly brought into a world of make believe. It seems that her boyfriend Nick has been transported to a hospital name St. Mary's. she tells them this but they don't believe her because it does not exist, but she knows she is not crazy, through out the film she is literally at battle with her sanity. To further her confusion, it seems that everyone knows her name and all about her, and they ask her to "come join them". This part of the plot reminded me of Stephen King's RIDING THE BULLET, do to fact that all of the character's know about the subjects predetermined future. All of this is well done, and just downright creepy at times, we even have Kane "Jason" Hodder as one of the demons, a homeless one at that....it doesn't get any better than that. Throughout the film, we are given the impression that AMY isn't as innocent as appears to be that she has done something evil and it stems from her childhood - The film doesn't let up on it, and it keeps you guessing until the very end....a good way to keep you watching.
The film itself has a little star power, as ZOOLANDER star and Ben Stiller's wife, Christine Taylor stars as the main character. She does a very convincing job as Amy, although overacting in some areas. Jerry O'Connell's performance was less convincing and rather weak as the guy in the offending vehicle whose sister is persumingly taken to St. Mary's hospital as well. The character started out all nice and sweet, but then later revealed as a demon, the evil part didn't win me over, it was not too believable seeing O'Connell act in this manner. Other appearances's are made by Ellie Cornell, whom most will know from HALLOWEEN 4 and 5. I absolutely love seeing Ellie in anything, she has been a favorite of mine for many years, and has appeared in all of Altman's most recent projects...here she does a great job as the strung out mother of Melissa. Speaking of Melissa, she is a student that Amy teaches and apparently can see right through her teacher's fears. Chloe Grace Mortez, who stole my heart in the AMITYVILLE HORROR remake does it again! This little girl is so fantastic that it is just phenomenal, her. character is genuinely scary creepy without even over doing itself - what a jewel Chloe is!
Although ending in a rather predictable fashion, ROOM 6 is a psychological thriller that works for me - it's certainly not perfect but does it's job. The Stephen King like pace and the freakish atmosphere is what made this film rather enjoyable.

GORE
METER
5/10 The gore in this film, although not heavy, just has enough to shock, as if the hospital wasn't enough.

MUSICAL
SCORE
5/10 The film's score is rather dull at first, but in the last half improves - it ends with a great tune that reminded me of Jerry Goldsmith's "Carol Anne" theme from POLTERGEIST.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this film, I thought it would be the typical Mark Altman project, this time with a little more star power. It's actually a step up for Altman as some of the things are really well done and executed. Great story, decent acting....I'd highly recommend ROOM 6, most importantly, if you are a Stephen King fan.
This DVD will be released on June 13, 2006
