THE REVIEW
When receiving this film from Director of Photography Jose Cassella, I had no knowledge of this film. All I know is that it was shot in Rome in the year 2004 and it was a heavily religious driven film. I am the very first person to ever publish a review for "Ring of the Bishop, and for that I am eternally grateful.
However, I am sorry to write that my opinions on this film are very negative. The story is about Monsignor Pace, whom is a day shy away from receiving the title of Bishop for his church. It is not soon after that we learn, that pace has a few hidden secrets of his own. Within this time Pace meets up with a young women that is in turmoil and have problems that almost seems to mirror that of his own. Just a day prior the young woman Lisa has brutally murdered a woman that had paid her for sex. Lisa has kidnapped Pace to find the answer.....soon he and she both come to the realization that there is no answer he can give.
That is just the side story of this film, what really lies beneath is that this movie is actually about 2 conflicting beliefs. It's about how a man of the cloth must come to terms of just who he is and wants to be and how he chooses to deal with Satan's, temptations and sins. In the end both he and Lisa both learn the true meaning of Life with Pace being in the flesh while as Lisa in the after life.
That is what I gather from the film as this film is rather hard to get into or follow. This movie is what you would call more of a "dialogue driven" film. This in itself made it an extremely exhausting and boring film. The plot of the story was just too weak to be carried out and that really hurt the film in the long run. With this film it gets you hoping that you are going to get more from it as the movie goes along....when in reality you don't get much of anything more than what you've been presented for the last hour or so. It needed something more going on, well it got it, it got some action but it was just too late to save the film, it came in just under the 1 hour and 11 minute mark, which is entirely too late. But in all fairness the last 5 minutes of the film were average, but when you have audiences, we don't watch the film for the last couple of minutes of it, we want the whole film to be as good as the 5 minutes towards the end.
Although I didn't particularly like this film, it did look amazing visually and I would like to say that Mr. Cassella did a fine job, capturing Rome's true beauty.

MUSICAL
SCORE
3/10 The music was sometimes really good in this one, in all honesty.....some of it complemented well with the film well some of it seemed too upbeat for such a serious film such as this one.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
When receiving this, I had no idea as to what to expect. i'm not really big on religious films, That's right folks not even The Exorcist, it didn't do anything for me nor frighten me, but it did have some moments. This film had very few and far between moments when it really needed a lot to be good, this one just isn't for me.... |
