THE REVIEW
In NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D, the filmmakers present a new take on the legendary Horror story by George A. Romeo - and it is also entirely shot in 3D....hence the name.
The story begins as Barb and her brother Johnny arrive to attend the funeral of their Aunt, the arrive late, to find that no one is around. But soon it would be Barb whom is left alone, fighting odd what appears to be members of the living dead. She meets a young guy named Ben who takes her to the house of a client of his(he's a drug dealer), where they could fine shelter. But soon, even that old shack proves to not be safe at all from the dead whom lurk outside. Soon it is revealed that this is the work of the Son of a mortician, Gerald Tovar Jr. who has been storing bodies for years instead of cremating them - he has since developed a God complex, but even he realizes that bringing them back to life is possibly the worst thing he could've done.
For awhile, this, the second remake of the 1968 Romeo film was really hyped, it had a limited release theatrically, and seemed to take forever to reach a broader audience by being released on DVD. To be honest, I wasn't too excited about this one, spare the fact that it starred Sid Haig, as a crazy man in charge of a mortuary gone awry - and because it was shot in 3D. But the bottom line in my opinion, is that yes Sid Haig is likely the only reason to watch this....as for the 3D aspect, I was not that impressed. Either, it was my TV, or the glasses to that the DVD came with - or maybe it's just me....but I didn't see a big difference in anything... it definitely didn't "Wow" me in the way i'm guessing it was intended.
To me the plot wasn't interesting to begin with. They kept the basic premise, the main character names, while adding a few odds and ends to make it original. But the thing is, is that the original things they have added do really not much of anything to give it it's own differentially. The additions that are most notable, would be the most obvious things that you'd think that they would add. They have implemented both cell phones and pot farming, the shack is being lived in by a bunch of pot farmers. While these things make the film different from the original, I don't think they were necessary. I mean, do you think of pot-humor when thinking of a classic Horror film like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD,
This film is only 80 minutes long, and I think that is a good thing, because I found no real story to it other than the basic premise at hand, there were no real sub-plots to kind of help the film make a larger impact. About the only redeeming parts of the film that I could think of was the material featuring Sid Haig - the man is so talented and has a presence on screen that is very likeable - I believe he could even carry a film, if given the right amount of screen time. Unfortunately in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D, his screen time is good but just not enough. So for the most part in between Haig and the unnecessary pot-humor is a boring and slow pace that lost my interest fast, and i'm sure I won't be the only one with these same feelings.
Overall, to be honest, I just found this remake to be dull, with nothing new to add to the "Living Dead" brand of Horror. Sure the idea of 3D was a cool idea, but it doesn't really translate that well on DVD, and in the end becomes more of a distraction than an innovation.

GORE
METER
3/10 The typical, "zombie gore" is to be found here - gun shot wounds to the head, the eating of a corpse etc. Nothing special.

MUSICAL
SCORE
2.5/10 I don't remember much of anything standing out in this film as far as it's score goes, nothing truly memorable.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
Just because the film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is in the public domain, and anyone can do anything they want with it, doesn't necessarily mean that you should. This film is basically nothing more than another low budget direct-to-video quality film... but the fact that it has a name like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD attached to it, and that it was filmed in 3D has gained it for more attention than it rightfully deserves.
This DVD will be available on October 9, 2007
