THE REVIEW
HYBRID tells the story of Aaron, a man who blinded after he tries to save friend during a fire accident on his security job. With his eyesight now gone, Aaron becomes the first human subject for a Lab that as been curing blind animals with eye implants from other species of animal. During the procedure, Aaron receives the eyes of a Wolf, that was recently put down. The procedure is new to the doctors whom were cautious to preform it - but they are pleasantly surprised to learn that it looks like the transplant has been a success. For a few days, Aaron's vision improves drastically, but along with the improvements, he also begins to have visions as well as sudden urges, urges that of the Wolf. Not only did Aaron gain his sight back....he also inherited some unwanted traits, such as the hunger to feed. Aaron embarks on light night prowls for food, while the human side of him tries to reject the urges. The Laboratory sees Aaron as an immediate danger and orders a tactical team to hunt him down.

Well we have the movie THE EYE already, in which the main character receives a corneal transplant from a human...and then later experiences horrific happenings - so it doesn't surprise me that a film would come along and change this concept up a bit. And so they did, except this time it deals with a Human receiving an animal's eye in a transplant. The animal of choice here is a wold, and why not? They have some of the coolest looking eyes that would stand out in a film. The also put in the element that the eyes' new host would also inherent some other Wolf traits that would prove to be difficult to live/deal with. In my opinion, this concept they have come up here is quite brilliant, Unfortunately, in the film the idea is not exactly executed right. I'll admit that the first half of this movie had me hooked. I was loving that the young man, now half Wolf half man was being chased down by the lab, it kinda reminded me of the old INCREDIBLE HULK TV show in which The Hulk(played by Lou Ferrigno)was always being hunted - it indeed made for some great Television. There is also a little love story in her too, involving Aaron and Lydia, I think was revealed to have been the own of the wolf that supplied Aaron's transplants.

All of this was enjoyable, if not passable until the film gets down to it's last quarter, this is when the film turned into a full-fledged B-Movie......I started looking for Roger Corman, but he has nowhere to be found in this film.....but if he had been involved, he probably make this film's cheesy downhill change work in it's favor. Just earlier in this film, I was prepared to possibly call this, the 9th installment in the "Maneater Series", the best of the series so far. But as I arrived to the last portion of the film, that features an almost laughable standoff between Aaron and the tactical squad - followed by an ending sequence that made no sense, my rating slowly declined...and maybe I am being a bit lenient.

HYBRID is a film that starts out on the right track, but as the film progresses, it just can't keep up that consistency.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
I actually did like Hybrid initially, but towards mid film, I slowly lost interest as the film turned into something completely different. The overall idea of this film is cool, and I think that if there was a TV series based on the first half of this movie it would work, in a way that a show like ROSWELL did - have agents trying to figure him out....don't have him running around in a field with a bunch of Wolves. This movie would be one that you'd watch once, and then likely forget about later....the cover art is cool though.

This DVD will be released on July 8, 2008
