THE REVIEW
THE DAY THEY CAME BACK, centers around the interrogation of Phil, the only known survivor of an infestation of the living dead in the town of Glen Cove New York. Phil relives the events in his own words, yet not even Phil knows the true ending to the story just yet....
In this day and age when horror films come at a dime a dozen because just about anyone with a camera and an imagination can make one, it's really humbling when you do see one that looks as if it took some real dedication. That is the case with this twenty-two minute short by 23 year old New York filmmaker Scott Goldberg, the zombie fare entitled THE DAY THEY CAME BACK. Scott seems to be really proud of his film and rightfully so, he has been plugging this from the end of the earth and back via email and Myspace.com, so much so that it was becoming annoying I will admit. But now I must apologize to Scott as now, I do see why, it is a great short and he used all of his resources to their fullest extent, that is something to be greatly proud of,
As far as the story, THE DAY THEY CAME BACK is the typical zombie movie....zombies eat the living, people get infected and the only way to get rid of those pesky sons of bitches is to kill the brain. Despite being relatively the same thing we have seen over and over again, this film is actually nicely shot by Goldberg. The opening montage kind of reminded me of the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and I think along with the opening narration, was a great way to open this short. The actual zombie action within the film was reminiscent to me of another brilliant short I reviewed out of Seattle called SNOW DAY BLOODY SNOW DAY that I reviewed last year, sort of comical but edgy.
The acting here was a mixed affair. The top performances belong to Chiko Mendes and Paul Kratka... which I guess would be anyone's first assumption when looking at the listed cast. I will say that I was really surprised at just how good Mendes turned out to be in this film. I had only seen Chiko briefly of Saturday Night Live maybe once, so I was pleasantly surprised. Paul Kratka plays detective Ronner, the man in charge of questioning our character Phil. Kratka from FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III, is a tremendous actor and it shows... the only complaint I have. along with that some of the film's dialogue is rather text book, is that I wish he could've been seen more of him, but hey, it's a 22 minute short- what can you do?
In closing, I thought this was a great story packed in less than thirty minutes, and if this was shot on just a $3,000 budget, well then I can't wait to see what Mr. Goldberg could do with a budget much higher!.

6/10 The gore featured here is surprisingly good considering the $3,000 budget that they had |

MUSICAL
SCORE
5/10 Although the score didn't play a huge factor, I feel that they way it was incorporated within the story added another level of excitement to the film.
