THE REVIEW
Well it has been awhile since I reviewed, so I thought i'd check out a "good 'Ol Creature Feature". But what I ended up getting from the film CREEPIES was not all that "good at all.

The story begins when a horde of spiders that have been genetically altered by the military for war combat is accidentally released onto the city of Los Angeles. Stronger and more menacing than the average spider, the military must hunt down and kill what was once attended to help them. Joining the fight are Jake and his cousin's all girl punk band.

To be honest with you, I really, really wanted to like this film. Eric Spudic, whom wrote the screenplay is a young guy, who to me seems very passionate about the work and the films he's appeared in Even though Eric is a great guy and all and shows a lot of promise, it's also my job here to be honest and to not take sides on these manners. With all of this said, I will say that CREEPIES was not the best film in the world, or was it all that original either. Looking at this film instantly made me remember a film distributed by EI Independent Cinema, entitled BITE ME....which I have reviewed here on The Hook with a far better rating. In BITE ME, we basically have the same premise, all but replacing the spiders found in CREEPIES with giant green bugs and setting our location in a strip club. Stop motion animation was used in BITE ME and it appears that it was used in CREEPIES are so "I think". I felt that CREEPIES utilized the animation in a way that was so unreal and unbelievable that all it amounts to is an element in the film that was both laughable and cheesy at the same time. Although in both cases the bugs looked fake and unrealistic BITE ME was more appealing in that sense. All of this is a same because CREEPIES most definitely wins plot wise, It had a plot that maybe if done correctly with better skilled animation it may have been something great: Now i'm not meaning a higher budget here, but maybe a longer thought process to map it all out?

Speaking of the animation used here, there is an awful lot of use of what appears to be stock footage, models and CGI. I have never been a fan of an over abundance of this stuff in films. I DO NOT particularly care for directors that base almost half of their film on CGI and models, I feel this is relying on other people's talents in order to make the director look good. Take Uwe Boll for instance, you won't see me at an Uwe Boll support rally anytime soon, as he has done nothing to impress me yet....although his CGI artists may have.

The only good thing going for the acting here in my opinion, are Phoebe Dollar, and Lisa Jay. Although Dollar, was not a standout in this film, I hope she will be the standout in another film down the road, as she showed that she has the potential: which is hard for anyone to accomplish when they are being attacked by goofy looking animated spiders, But my personal favorite, and you probably knew it was coming, is Lisa Jay! Without being a little bias, I loved Jay's performance in DEATH FACTORY, and couldn't wait to see more of her as soon as DEATH FACTORY's credits rolled. Well, with CREEPIES I got that chance, and even though this was relatively bad, it showed that Lisa Jay has what it takes and is most likely destined to become a star in this genre or any other, let's hope film's like CREEPIES and DEATH FACTORY are this young lady's stepping stone!

This film occasionally had some funny dialogue, but it's hard to accomplish any thing with that when the FXs are far funnier than the lines in which are spoken.

GORE METER
4/10 A little gory but cheesy, not as fun as one would hope in a creature feature.

MUSICAL SCORE
3.5/10 I was not a big fan of the soundtrack, some generic instrumentals and also music by punkers Manda and The Marbles.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
I am a little discouraged, there are far better films out there, like another one starring Ron Jeremy called ANDRE THE BUTCHER(aka DEAD MEAT) by Phil Cruz that have not had a DVD release yet - why is that? Well, forget all of that, I'd be lying if I said some of this wasn't fun to watch - but that's only "some". I didn't really like this film, I have seen this already in BITE ME, with far better production values I might add.
