THE REVIEW
CREEP, follows the story of a young German woman named Kate. It starts off by showing Kate at a rave party with some co-workers and friends. Kate and another friend have plans to go into town the next day because the her that George Clooney will be in town and they really look forward to meeting him. When she decides to leave and head on into that nearby town Kate suddenly discovers that the said friend has already left the party early, with her only ride now gone, Kate opts to ride the train instead. She arrives at a subway station that appears to be very busy so she decides to wait for the next train that will be boarding within minutes on a nearby bench. Minutes later, it seems that Kate has fallen asleep and when she awakes, the sub station is now mysteriously empty, it appears that she is the only one still there. In a panic, she franticly searches all over for any sign of life, when she runs into a male co-worker counterpart who has obviously been following her. As the man proceeds to force himself upon her, he tries to rape the woman, when he is all of the sudden yanked off off Kate by an un seen being who savagely beats the would be rapist. In a panic Kate runs as indeed the unknown killer is now after her. Trapped inside the station, it is now up to Kate and a homeless man whom she meets named Jimmy who lives inside to find a way out before meeting their death at the hands of the 'Creep'.
Going into this movie, i'll admit I knew nothing about it, but know that I have seen CREEP I can tell you that I am honestly amazed by it! In my opinion this is one of the best imports(this one being from the UK) that I have seen in quite awhile. The story does always seem to keep you on edge as director Christopher Smith gives you a sense that you are right in the thick of the action. Being trapped in an unknown environment all alone is a really uneasy and definitely scary thought and this film goes deep into that feeling of unsafely. The subway system used in the film is quite huge, but as soon as the suspense picks up, the filmmakers make you feel as if it has suddenly shrunk to the size of an airline bathroom or something similar. It truly gives off a feeling of entrapment, almost like the actor is stuck at every turn. That previously mentioned is just the environment it self, when you throw in a weird vicious looking mutated human stalker it gets that much more interesting.
The killer apparently has been killing off occupants of the subway for a while now. When he finally kidnaps Kate, he drags her down to an ever deeper part of the tunnel system. It is an underground hideaway of sorts where he keeps his victims locked away...it is a truly freaky looking setup. While locked up in the secluded area, Kate meets another victim whose name is ironically 'George'. She and George somehow manage to break free, and then they manage to find even more freaky surroundings, including a surgery room as well as a room with a few baby cribs and fetuses in jars. Apparently the mutated killer has been kept here since birth, as pictures are found with a young freak boy standing next to a doctor. Perhaps, one of the weaker points within the film is that the killer's origin is never fully explained, something I feel should have been examined upon.
The acting here i'd say is a little above average. No one else's performance in the movie ever matches the performance of Franka Potente, who portrays 'Kate'. Potente brings to life a realism to the screen, you really and truly believe that she is an incredibly attractive young woman whom is the most scared she has ever been in her life. She certainly does her job of keeping eyes and ears interested. Paul Rattray as 'Jimmy and Vas Blackwood as 'George' are two actors that the film really benefits from as well, more so the character of George whom ultimately goes out heroically.
Overall CREEP is one ride that starts off slow and speeds you into a frenzy of terror and suspense, with some scenes that you my find downright freaky and disturbing!

GORE
METER
6/10 As I mentioned, some of the scenes that are contained in CREEP are eerily disturbing including a surgery at the beginning while the victim is still awake and breathing.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
Not really being a fan of imports, I will admit that some of the things in CREEP nearly blew my mind leaving me highly impressed. Again the only downfall may be it's lack of origin(It is explained a little better on the DVD's extras) but it certainly does not hurt the film to much. Highly recommendable!
