THE REVIEW
In CANDY STRIPERS, a space ship has crashed and the occupants are quick to take up residences in the form of the female body. They take over the bodies of several Candy Stripers(volunteer workers at a hospital) - their objective is to mate at all cost. When two injured basketball players are put into the hospital for treatment, the two witness some strange occurrences. Strangely the staff of the hospital has suddenly all got an addiction to all things sugar, and the hallways are dressed with cobwebs. The two team mates, one's girlfriend, and the other's sister, somehow then believe it's their duty to save the world from the sexed up sugar high aliens....
The plot of CANDY STRIPERS is a lot similar to the Canadian Horror film DECOYS, in fact it resembles it so closely it is more like "DECOYS in a hospital" If I were to compare the two, I would say that DECOYS is the best out of both films. DECOYS was a fun film to watch and had average acting that just wasn't that bad. CANDY STRIPERS, attempts to capitalize on all of the Things that DECOYS seemed to utilize to it's advantage, a plot about aliens taking over the bodies of hot girls and a great setting, Decoys had sorority girls, while CANDY STRIPERS had Playboy Playmates, DECOYS had a college with a snowy atmosphere....while this film had a hospital, with plenty departments to use. I believe that their motive for getting the Playboy Playmates was for mass appeal only, I mean can Playmates truly act? I have yet to see one that could, with maybe the exception of AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS BAND CAMP's Angela Little and Carmen Electra.
When I received this film, I really expected to like it, simply for the fact that CANDY STRIPERS is both written and directed by women. Women have basically, in my eyes, created some of the best Horror Films in history - most notably the SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE series of films. But my expectations were let down once I saw that even though it very much had a great plot, it was obviously too unoriginal for it's own good. Even if a film like this is somewhat unoriginal, if it has interesting characters it should do it's job, and that is to entertain. But in my honest opinion, the characters, especially the Candy Stripers were just not all too interesting, and if something in your film is chosen to be the focal point, they very well should be. Honestly the only likeable character to me, is Eliza Swenson's character of Sally, whom we just did not see enough of here - however she does commit one of the most gruesome murders in the film.
As I said, I really wanted to like this film, and since it sounded like DECOYS a film I did like I thought I would. However, CANDY STRIPERS lacks a charisma and wit that Horror comedies often have.... it often takes itself too seriously....

GORE
METER
4.5/10 The gory in CANDY STRIPERS is often cheesy and campy, the best moments are when one's genitals are bitten off and the Candy Stripers giving birth by mouth!

OVERALL
IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
I'll admit that I was excited about this plot since I have seen it be successful once already, but the truth is I found CANDY STRIPERS rather boring. If you want a great film with a similar story try DECOYS....
This DVD will be released on June 27, 2006
