THE REVIEW
BLOODRAYNE, based on the video game of the same title, follows Rayne, a young female who is half human, half vampire, or know as a dhampir. She was born as a result of the mating between her human mother and a vampire, a vampire whom aspires to be the king of all vampires known as Kagan. Rayne has held a grudge with all vampires ever since she saw the rape and murder of her mother at the hands of Kagan as a small child. When Rayne hears of Kagan's plans she plans to fight back and to avenge the death of her mother, but she won't be alone - she is joined by two vampire hunters in their own right...Valdimir and Sebastian who call themselves "The Brimstone Society".

Well, I never thought i'd say this, but Uwe Boll has finally made a good video game adaptation film! I know that hatred for Boll's work has grown strong amongst fans since his two other films, HOUSE OF THE DEAD and ALONE IN THE DARK tanked...and even I was one of the people whom shared this hatred. I believe with BLOODRAYNE, it is a product of learning from one's mistakes ; There are no video game clips or matrix like bullets so rest easy. On IMDb, BLOODRAYNE is ranked amongst the worst movies of all time, and honestly after seeing it I have come to the conclusion that the ranking is based on the previous mentioned hatred for Uwe Boll and not the film in which holds the ranking. I believe that is completely unfair and immature of visitors of IMDb to do this as it doesn't give movie watchers an open mind.... everyone should have a chance to redeem themselves and to me Boll has with BLOODRAYNE.

To me, I thought that the story for the film was far more entertaining than anything Uwe has ever done, as it almost plays out like a novel - it really kept me connected. Furthermore with the director cut DVD, BLOODRAYNE is more gory than ever and makes for some highly entertaining, highly impactful action sequences, some which are incredibly well choreographed and executed. As compared to say HOUSE OF THE DEAD and ALONE IN THE DARK, the fighting scenes are well thought out and more realistic than either film - that was one of the major problems the sequences in Boll's far less favorable effects were a little too over the top and cheesy to be well received by a smart audience.

The acting is somewhat passable, I really enjoyed Kristanna Loken's performance as Rayne, I believe she really embodied the perfect Rayne - she is beautiful while she proceeds to kick vampire ass! I also enjoyed Michelle Rodriguez's performance as well, but did find it a little weird to be hearing her speak in accent, being used to her ever so raspy voice. I also feel that Ben Kingsley's talent was rather wasted though....I loved him in SUSPECT ZERO and he has far too much talent for such a small role. As for other performances I didn't really grow fond of Matt Davis' character Sebastian either and though Michael Madsen's performance was rather bland and dry - likely the worst I've seen of him.

Overall, I think that BLOODRAYNE is a vast improvement for Uwe Boll, and I believe fans should loosen their grip on the proverbial noose around his neck. I found the film quite enjoyable and fun....the action is well worth the watch.

GORE METER
6.0/10 As mentioned, the directors cut DVD offers up a ton of blood, I was really shocked to see as much as I did in the film- heads and limbs flying everywhere, it was good to see.

MUSICAL SCORE
4.5/10 The score here is kind of funny, because it improves over time and gets a lot better than it was from beginning.

OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE FILM
Now people reading this(mostly the Uwe Boll bashers) will probably think i'm nuts, or hell they might not visit The Hook ever again, but BLOODRAYNE entertained me for 2 hours! So shoot me now - but I say even if you dislike Uwe Boll, I say give it a shot!

The DVD will be available on May 23, 2006
